Authorities Call for Urgent Evacuations Following Severe Flooding
Nepal’s government has issued an urgent plea for residents in central Nepal to evacuate to safer grounds after a significant flood event swept through parts of the Gorkha district. This has led to widespread damage, including the destruction of homes and essential infrastructure. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported as of yet.
Landslide Triggers Flooding in Budhi Gandaki River
The flood was precipitated by a dry landslide in Chumnubri village, located approximately 100 kilometers west of the nation’s capital, Kathmandu. This landslide obstructed the Budhi Gandaki River, consequently causing the river to overflow and flood downstream areas. The Budhi Gandaki is a crucial tributary of the Trishuli River, which has historically been prone to flooding.
Destruction and Damage: Infrastructure and Housing
Dharmendra Kumar Mishra, Gorkha district’s chief bureaucrat, reported that the flood had displaced around a dozen homes and swept away two suspension bridges. Additionally, a hydroelectric project camp situated in the area sustained significant damage. The rising water levels of the river, now carrying a heavy mix of muddy debris, have also demolished a highway bridge that connected Gorkha with the neighboring Dhading district.
Rescue Operations and Government Response
In response to the crisis, the Nepalese army has been actively involved in rescue operations, successfully saving six individuals from a landslide-threatened area in Jagat. Prime Minister Balendra Shah confirmed these efforts through a social media update. Furthermore, 18 workers from the damaged hydroelectric project managed to reach safety on their own.
National Disaster Alert and Precautions
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has issued alerts to residents living near the riverbanks in Gorkha, Tanahun, Chitwan, East Nawalparasi, and West Nawalparasi districts. The authority emphasized the importance of timely evacuation and urged communities to assist in search and rescue operations. Official statements on social media called for collective efforts to ensure the safety of residents in affected areas.
Monitoring and Ongoing Efforts
Authorities have deployed army and police personnel to the impacted regions. These teams are not only involved in ground-level rescue efforts but are also conducting aerial monitoring using helicopters to assess the situation continuously. This proactive approach aims to mitigate further potential damage and ensure rapid response to any emerging threats.
As the situation unfolds, the necessity for vigilance and cooperation among local communities and authorities remains paramount. The government continues to work towards ensuring the safety and security of its citizens while addressing the infrastructural challenges posed by the flooding.
