Afghanistan Faces Catastrophic Floods: Rescue Operations Underway
In the wake of severe flash floods that have devastated eastern Afghanistan, rescue teams are on the ground searching for survivors amid widespread destruction. At least 23 lives have been lost, and over 100 individuals remain unaccounted for, according to the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority.

The eastern province of Nuristan has borne the brunt of the disaster, with the provincial capital, Parun, among the worst affected areas. Zubair Ahmad, a resident of Parun, recounted the harrowing experience, stating, “The flood came through here. We saw bodies being swept away in the floodwaters with our own eyes. The flooding caused extensive damage and heavy losses for the local people.”

Amid the chaos, emergency response units, equipped with bulldozers and shovels, are working to clear the debris and mud. Video footage from Parun reveals scenes of utter devastation, with piles of rubble where structures once stood. Despite these efforts, the threat of additional floods looms large, as forecasters predict more extreme weather conditions, including heavy rains and thunderstorms, across 10 provinces.
The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has issued warnings urging residents to steer clear of riverbanks and areas susceptible to flooding, as the country’s vulnerability to such weather events remains high.
