UAE’s Promising Start at the 4th GCC Games in Doha
The United Arab Emirates has made an impressive entrance at the 4th GCC Games 2026 in Doha, opening its medal tally with notable achievements in taekwondo. On the first day of the competition, UAE athletes showcased their exceptional skills by securing a gold and a bronze medal, setting a high bar for the remainder of the event.
Gold Triumph in Taekwondo for Amna Al Loughani
Amna Al Loughani, representing the UAE national team, clinched the gold medal in the women’s under-67kg category. Her outstanding performance and technical finesse earned her the top podium position, elevating the UAE flag high in Doha. The competition was intense, yet Al Loughani’s dedication and preparation paid off, as she expressed immense delight in her victory.
Expressing her gratitude, Al Loughani remarked, “Praise be to God. Winning the gold medal and representing the UAE on this stage is an immense honor. Reflecting on her achievement, Al Hammadi said, “Thanks to God for this bronze medal. The level of competition was exceptionally high, and it’s gratifying to have succeeded in representing the UAE. The UAE’s representation at the GCC Games is formidable, with 164 athletes competing across 17 sports disciplines, including table tennis, equestrian, swimming, and more. The delegation, comprising 115 men and 49 women, aims to build on the promising start and enhance the UAE’s medal tally throughout the event.
The Games commenced with a vibrant opening ceremony at Al Shaqab Indoor Arena in Doha, featuring cultural displays and performances that highlighted Qatari and Gulf heritage. Sheikh Ali Jamal Bin Nasser Al Nuaimi and Shouq Al Hammadi had the honor of carrying the UAE flag during the ceremony.
Historical Context and UAE’s Sporting Legacy
The GCC Games, an integral sporting event in the region, first took place in Bahrain in 2011. The UAE’s best performance in the Games occurred in 2015 in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, where they finished second with a total of 73 medals. In the 2022 edition in Kuwait, the UAE secured third place with 50 medals.
As the UAE continues its participation in the current Games, the volleyball team is set to begin its campaign against Qatar and compete in a single round-robin format against other Gulf nations.
