FIA President Highlights Volunteers’ Crucial Role in Formula One
The President of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), Mohammed Ben Sulayem, has commended the thousands of volunteers who underpin the success of Formula One racing. A groundbreaking study by the FIA University has illuminated the immense scale, value, and dedication these volunteers bring to the sport, underscoring their indispensable role.
Essential Backbone of the Championship
The comprehensive research, the first of its kind, reveals that at least 20,112 trained volunteers are essential to operate the 24 rounds of the Formula One World Championship each season. On average, 838 volunteers are required per race weekend, establishing a ratio of 42 volunteers for each Formula One driver on the track. This figure represents the highest volunteer-to-competitor ratio in global sports.
Each volunteer dedicates approximately 48 hours to every race weekend, culminating in a staggering 965,376 hours of service throughout the season. Ben Sulayem emphasized, “Volunteers are the backbone of our sport – without them, we simply could not go racing. They ensure our competitions are safe and fair, acting with professionalism and pride.”
Wide-Ranging Responsibilities
From flag marshals to incident officers, and extrication teams to race observers, volunteers ensure the smooth operation and safety of the sport. Their presence fosters a unique environment of camaraderie, teamwork, and unity at every championship round.
The study also highlights that 65% of volunteers willingly take annual leave or unpaid time off from their regular jobs to serve at these events, showcasing their deep commitment and passion for the sport.
Significant Investment in Training
As the global governing body for motorsport, the FIA invests heavily in the long-term development of its competitions. This commitment is evident through training and development programs that the FIA and its member clubs provide, which collectively translate to an investment exceeding €11 million annually.
Such initiatives not only equip volunteers with the necessary skills but also ensure the maintenance of high standards across all races. The study underscores the importance of these investments in sustaining the sport’s growth and ensuring each event is staffed by dedicated personnel.
Volunteer Retention and Growth
Volunteer retention remains a significant strength for Formula One, with two-thirds of these dedicated individuals having served for over five years. This consistency speaks volumes about the positive culture and rewarding experiences that volunteering in Formula One offers.
In recent years, as Formula One has expanded globally, volunteer workloads have increased by 20%. Despite these demands, the retention rates remain strong, demonstrating the volunteers’ unwavering commitment to the sport.
