Introduction of New Guidelines for AI-Generated Music
The Official MENA Chart, responsible for ranking the most popular songs across the Middle East and North Africa, has introduced a groundbreaking set of guidelines to determine the eligibility of AI-generated music. These new standards are also being applied to the national charts in Egypt, North Africa, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
Background and Purpose of the MENA Chart
Launched in 2022 and powered by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), the Official MENA Chart serves as a definitive barometer of musical success across 13 markets in the region. It collates data from leading streaming platforms, offering a comprehensive overview of the music landscape. Alongside the regional chart, IFPI maintains official charts for individual nations, contributing to a holistic view of musical achievements.
Defining the Boundary Between Human and AI Creativity
The newly introduced framework aims to delineate the line between human-led artistic endeavors and compositions generated by unauthorized artificial intelligence models. The initiative seeks to ensure that music born from genuine creativity is celebrated, while tracks with inflated stream counts through fraudulent means are excluded from recognition.
These principles, crafted by IFPI in collaboration with major music entities like Sony Music, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music Group, aim to adapt charts for the appropriate integration of AI in creative processes, without undermining human artistry.
Core Criteria for AI Music Eligibility
For a track developed using AI to qualify for chart inclusion, it must satisfy three pivotal criteria:
- The AI technology utilized must be authorized and lawful.
- The majority of the track must be produced by humans.
- The track must not be involved in stream or chart manipulation.
The emergence of AI-generated music on streaming platforms, often created with tools trained on artists’ work without permission, has prompted a call for authorized development and licensing of AI music services to respect creators’ rights.
Global Efforts for Transparency in AI-Generated Music
This move comes on the heels of a recent global initiative by music creators and companies to introduce voluntary labeling of music tracks. This labeling distinguishes between “AI-Generated” and “AI-Assisted” music, aiming for widespread adoption across digital music services and partners, providing fans with clearer insights into the use of generative AI in sound recordings.
Statements from Industry Leaders
Rawan Al-Dabbas, Regional Director of IFPI MENA, emphasized the importance of continuing to celebrate the exceptional talent and cultural diversity of the region’s artists. “It’s crucial to ensure that our charts remain a platform for authentic artistic achievement, while also embracing new and innovative forms of expression,” she stated.
Victoria Oakley, CEO of IFPI, highlighted the importance of charts in celebrating human creativity. “Music charts do more than track sales; they honor the artistic journey. This framework ensures that innovation can flourish without compromising the integrity of artists’ work,” Oakley explained. “AI, when properly licensed and authorized, offers exciting potential to augment the creative toolkit, but it must not exploit artists’ creations.”
The Future of AI and Human Creativity in Music
As the capabilities of AI continue to evolve, the music industry is keen on leading the charge in ensuring a responsible growth trajectory for technology and human artistry. The newly established principles provide a structured pathway for innovation, ensuring that AI-generated music does not infringe upon or overshadow the genuine creativity of artists.
