Golden Dragon: A Half-Century of Culinary Excellence
Golden Dragon, one of the pioneering Chinese restaurants in the United Arab Emirates, is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Established on October 14, 1976, by the late K.M. Bhatia under KM Brothers, the restaurant has been a cornerstone of the culinary scene in Bur Dubai, influencing the gastronomic landscape long before the city became a global food hub.
A Journey Rooted in Tradition
From its inception, Golden Dragon has been more than just a dining venue; it has been a place where families and friends gather to create lasting memories. The original concept was brought to life by Sunder Mans, the General Manager of KM Brothers at the time, who personally sourced furniture, equipment, and traditional decor from China. Mumbai-based architect Lalitha Sakthi designed the interiors, with Chandrasekhar leading the fit-out work.
Celebrating a Legacy
The golden jubilee celebration was a nostalgic reunion for many. Among the attendees were Bhatia’s family, including his wife Kamla, his son Kamlesh and his family, and his daughter Pinky. Also present were former employees, loyal patrons, and friends who have been part of the restaurant’s journey over the decades. Mirza Hussain Al Sayegh, the UAE’s first Ambassador to India, graced the occasion as the chief guest, participating in the ceremonial cake-cutting.
Personal Reflections from Industry Leaders
K. Muraleedharan, Chairman and Managing Director of SFC Group, shared personal reflections on the significance of Golden Dragon’s anniversary. His career began with KM Brothers, and he fondly remembered the late K.M. Bhatia and his initial employment under the guidance of Sunder Mans. Muraleedharan emphasized the sense of responsibility and honor felt when SFC Group took over Golden Dragon in 2013, aiming to preserve and continue its legacy.
Culinary Offerings: A Blend of Tradition and Innovation
Golden Dragon’s menu has long been a blend of traditional Chinese dishes and innovative Asian cuisine. Classics like Dragon Dumplings, Mapo Tofu, Chilli Chicken, and Dragon Pot Rice continue to delight patrons, while newer offerings such as Singaporean Chilli Crab cater to evolving palates. The restaurant’s commitment to quality and authenticity has remained unwavering over the decades.
Expanding the Golden Legacy
Golden Dragon continues to expand its reach within the UAE. Following the recent launch at Sharjah Central Mall, a new outlet is set to open at Deerfields Mall in Abu Dhabi on October 21. The expansion signifies the restaurant’s enduring appeal and its ability to adapt to changing times while staying true to its roots.
Preserving Memories Through Community Engagement
A unique initiative to preserve its rich history is underway, with the restaurant inviting long-time customers to share photographs and personal stories from the past. This effort highlights the community’s central role in Golden Dragon’s story, showcasing the deep connections formed over shared meals.
A Timeless Institution
Golden Dragon’s enduring presence is a testament to its ability to bring people together. As it marks 50 years, the restaurant remains a beloved institution in the UAE, celebrated for its contributions to the country’s diverse culinary tapestry. The legacy of Golden Dragon is not just about the food but also the friendships and memories forged around its tables.
